As TEDxManhattan approaches, we are checking in with past speakers to get an update on their work.  Below, Curt Ellis updates us on FoodCorps, which was the topic of his talk at TEDxManhattan 2011.

At the 2011 TEDxManhattan, Curt Ellis introduced his vision for FoodCorps: a “Peace Corps” for healthy school food. Today, FoodCorps is a thriving national nonprofit, currently supporting a second class of 80 service members across a dozen states.

FoodCorps leaders spend a year of paid public service teaching children about what healthy food is and where it comes from, building and tending school gardens where kids get to grow, cook and taste fresh fruits and vegetables, and working with farmers and food service teams to get local, sustainably grown ingredients served in school lunch. Last year alone, the pioneering FoodCorps class taught more than 51,000 children, built or revitalized 382 gardens, and recruited 1,800 community volunteers to help transform kids’ relationship to food.
